This is a wonderful exercise for children to play around with their breath and get a sense of what the breath is.
Firstly, give the child a ball of play dough and ask them to roll it into a sausage shape. This is some wonderful sensory play.
Then ask the child to lie the play dough in a spiral shape. Place a pompom at the opening of the spiral and ask the child to blow it to the centre of the spiral and then back out again. This can be repeated a few times.
If the child blows too hard, the pompom will overshoot the boundary. If the child blows to softly, the pompom won’t move. This helps them to make sense of this invisible, untouchable thing called the breath. You can also add some essential oils to the play dough to make it even more of a sensory exercise.
